And … … it’s a hit!
For years there have been pockets of Flag Football programs throughout our region. The Bell Warriors were one of these clubs who hosted an annual Spring Co-ed Flag Program. So it was a natural for the Warriors to be chosen to be a host club of NCAFA’s Inaugural league-wide Spring non-contact program. The Warriors will be hosting a program in the West, the Nepean Eagles a program in the South and the Cumberland Panthers in the East for you ages 5-15.
Football Canada has made non-contact football a primary initiative to grow the sport and their First Down Program is seen to be a program to initiate youth to football and an acitve lifestyle. Football Canada’s First Down Program helps kids under the age of eight moving and active while having fun. The goal is to help develop their movement abilities and foster further participation in physical activity or sport. NCAFA will be expanding to incorporate a Mite flag program modelled on the First Down Program. Rodney Moors, Warriors and NCAFA Director of Non-Contact Programs, says of the new program, “the sessions of the First Down Program develop fundamental movement skills like running, throwing, catching and kicking. The program incorporates football related movements, activities, and skills to help build physical literacy. Expanding our non-contact programs to incorporate co-ed flag football was a natural progression of our league. We are working to grow the sport in the Ottawa region.”
