Jacob Baylin – Our Youngest Sponsor Ever!!

Jacob Baylin is a 16 year old young man who lives in Crystal Beach, Nepean.  He played football with the local Bell Warriors Football Club and his youngest brother is still in the program.  For those that have been involved with the club more closely, you’ll know Jacob’s father Rich Baylin who is currently our Pee Wee Head Coach.  This past Saturday, Jacob took the time to present me, Paul Stewart (Bell Warriors Football President), with a cheque to help contribute to our club’s efforts to support players who are financially challenged.   This was his own money that he earned working this past summer.  In making this generous donation, Jacob becomes the newest, and by far the youngest, Friend of the Warriors Sponsor.

L to R: Warriors Alumni and our youngest Warriors Sponsor Jacob Baylin and Paul Stewart (Warriors President)

“Every year, the Warriors have numerous players that just could not afford to play football without some financial support.  It is a key mandate of the Warriors to ensure we do all we can to make our great sport affordable for all.  We rely heavily on community support for our young players and it is truly amazing to see someone as young as Jacob recognize and contribute to the cause.  Jacob was a leader in his playing days with the Warriors and continues to set an example that we could all learn from and aspire to.” – Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors President.

That’s the way to #PayItForward Jacob! THANK YOU!!!

#ZackStrong – Support his Battle

Many of you are familiar with Zack Statham-Souliere who played for us from tyke through bantam playing his last year with the Warriors in 2015.  His mother and father Karin Statham and Guy Souliere were huge contributors to our world-famous canteen for years.  Uncle Scotty has coached multiple levels for years.  His son Logan (Zack’s 1st cousin) played as well all the way through our program and still helps out with our bantams.  Scotty’s wife was a team manager and an unreal volunteer while her and Scotty’s daugther Makayla was our inaugural Volunteer of the Year!

The Warriors just learned recently that Zack is in a battle with leukemia and started the chemotherapy the day after he found out.  Warriors are all about supporting our players on and off the field.  We will be combining a fundraiser with our Warriors Annual Homecoming Day this year October 15.  More details will follow.   We also want to bring your attention to a Go Fund Me account that has been opened up to help the Zack and his family with costs that will surely be incurred while he fights his battle.  Click on this link to show your support for Zack and his family:  #ZackStrong Leukemia Fight

Thanks for showing you care!

Our Condolences to the Rodney Moors & his family

Paul Stewart, President of the Warriors, says “My friend since grade 7.   Rodney Moors stopped by tonight to talk about the Girl’s Touch Football Championship this weekend even though he and his family are dealing with the loss of his mother after an amazingly fruitful life at the age of 90 yesterday.  Rodney coaches and oversees the Girl’s program for our team and the entire league.  Read this obituary to get a glimpse of what the Moors family is all about.  Rodney is a teacher, elite athlete but most importantly a caring father, husband and relentless volunteer in our community. ”

10 Years but worth the wait – FLAG IS BACK!

It’s been over a decade since the Warriors hosted their successful Spring Flag Football Program but it’s back and with great enthusiasm! “I wouldn’t have been involved with the club if it wasn’t for flag nor would my past DC Terry Schaefer or current OC  and Club VP Tim Sheahan.  It was a very important program to get youth introduced into our great sport back then.  Unfortunately over time, we lost some key volunteers and it fell by the wayside”, states Paul Stewart, Warriors President

This past winter Charlie Keenan reached out to the Warriors.  Charlie is attending Queens University but had some time that he wanted to dedicate to giving back to his old club.  Charlie not only started playing football with our flag program but he became one of the very best players our club had at the time.  “Charlie was athletic, ultra-intelligent and driven”, states Stewart.  “I had the fortune to coach Charlie and when he chose to reach out to help our club, I was determined to find him a job.  Together we soon landed on Charlie being an instrumental volunteer to re-introduce our Spring Flag Football Program.”

The league started Saturday morning and fielded 7 full teams ages 7-13 with over 60 players.   Another key component of the re-launch was the use of Warriors alumni as coaches and referees for the program “We couldn’t be happier with the re-launch.   We volunteer to set an example for our youth and to see Charlie and so many Warriors alumni return to do the same is simply amazing”, concludes Stewart.

Tyke players Avery Stuart (left) and Louis Turpin are reunited week 1 of the Warriors 2017 Spring Flag Football Program. They were buds last year and will be leaders on our Tyke Tackle Football team this year.

Wariors Alumni Jack Rabb is one many ex-Warriors that have returned to coach our program. Gotta luv the way our Warriors are giving back! Class Act Jack!

THANKS CHARLIE KEENAN for taking on the task and making our re-launch of our Spring Flag Football Program a resounding success!

Largest Turn out for Girl’s Touch Football Yet!

Year after year after year, the Warriors’ Spring Girl’s Touch Football program continues to set new records. “I say there are two key factors that are driving the programs growth” , states Paul Stewart (Bell Warriors President).  “Our boosting of our communications with social media certainly have played a significant role in increasing the awareness of our program.  The primary contributing factor however is our own Rodney Moors.  Rodney has so much drive and determination to grow girl’s football in Ottawa.  He’s a teacher.  He’s a Canadian champion as a player and a coach and his passion for the sport is driving the growth of our Girl’s Touch Football Program without a doubt“, sums up Stewart.

The Warriors will be fielding 6-7 full girl’s touch football teams this year and we have offered programs for girls 10-23 year of age.  As with our tackle football program, the Girl’s Touch Football Program is affordable and accessible to all.   We think it is the ideal sport for girls to play in the Spring.

Games started this past week and will continue until the beginning of July.  The Warriors can’t thank Rodney Moors enough for his drive and dedication.  Rodney gets it.  It’s all about growing the sport and Rodney is our not-so-secret weapon.  THANKS RODNEY!!!

Stefano Napolitano Chasing His Dream

Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Warriors alumni Stefano Napolitano who has been invited to the 2017 CFL East Regional Combine.  Stef went all the way through the Warriors program and even played Midget with our sister club the Bel-Air Noresmen where he finished his NCAFA career by winning the league A-Cup Championship.  Since then, Stefano has been playing football for the Carleton Ravens as a fullback.  The last two-years, he has been named an OUA All-Star and his most recent honour is just one more notable step in his football journey.

When asked about the opportunity, Stefano said, “I am extremely grateful and honoured to be able to experience the combine.  It  was definitely an experience of a lifetime.”  Stefano has always been a driven, focused and competitive young man.  He’s a natural leader with a warm personality and unquestionable character which was formally recognized in 2013 by the Warriors when he was named a Jim Wagdin Post-Secondary Scholarship winner.

Keep excelling Stefano!  The Warriors are proud of you!

Teacher Paul Gowans Returns to the Warriors

The Warriors are excited to announce some great news for the upcoming 2017 tackle football season.  Paul Gowans will be returning to the Warriors to join our Pee Wee staff.  Paul is a Warriors alumni and coached with our program for years.  Most recently, Paul is the Athletic Director at South Carleton H.S.  He currently coaches their wrestling team and for many years, Paul was head coach of the football program at South.  Unfortunately, South no longer has a football program which is their loss but our gain.

Paul will be working on the offensive side of the ball for our newly named Pee Wee Head Coach Richard Baylin.   This will not be the first time the two men shared time on the gridiron for the Warriors.  Many years ago, the two played together with our Club.  “Rich is a class act.  His last stint as head coach was with our Mosquito club in 2015 where he oversaw an 8-0 season.  Rich was with our Pee Wees last year preparing for his transition to Head Coach.  We’re excited to have Rich in this new role and back together with his old Warriors teammate” – Paul Stewart, Warriors President

Rounding out our Pee Wee core coaching staff are Geoff Forsyth.  Geoff is a long-time Warriors coach and was our Mosquito Head Coach in 2016.  Joining the three men will be George Stengel who was our Mosquito OC last year.

Best of luck this upcoming season gentlemen!

Kelly Broad Establishes Dion Broad Memorial Fund

“In caring memory of a dear man, Dion Broad November 29, 1971-October 12, 2011.  A loving father, husband, brother, son and friend.  Dedicated civilian member of the RCMP, Scouts leader, soccer convenor and football fan.  He did not get to see his son on the Warriors field, but his spirit is with him.  The opportunity to find our hearts after losing Dion, will always be appreciated.  We cannot repay all the coaches and other volunteers for all they have done, and in ways they will never know.  On behalf of his family, who are too many to name, Thank you.”

Kind regards, Kelly, Keenan and Devon Broad

To remember and recognize the 5th anniversary of the Broad family’s loss of their loved-one Dion Broad, Kelly Broad and her two sons Devon and Keenan, have made an immensely thoughtful contribution to the Bell Warriors Football Club.  The monies are to be used to help ensure that players in need of financial support enjoy the opportunity to be part of the Warriors family.  “Kelly, Devon and Keenan (who plays for our Bantams) are truly kind and caring souls.  I know the Warriors family have all been moved by this gesture of generousity in loving memory of their lost husband and father.  Football can be a vehicle to reinforce the ideals of selflessness and compassion to your new friends, family and volunteers and it is hard to imagine any more fitting way to exemplify these heart-felt values than by this sacrifice by the Broad’s to support our young players in need. “ ~ Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors President.

The Warriors would like to add that more can always be done to help our players in financial need.  If you are moved by the Broad’s honourable show of generousity, please reach out to join the cause.  Simply email info@bellwarriors.ca to make an offer to help support our players in the memory of Dion Broad.  The Broad family and the Bell Warriors Thank You.

It’s all FOOTBALL this Weekend!

If you’re a “Warrior for Life” or just an everyday football fan, this is a weekend that we’re sure you’ve been waiting for.  Our Warriors will be venturing down to TD place today to watch our Ottawa REDBLACKS hand the Edmonton Eskimos their 4th loss of the season.  GO REDBLACKS!  Our Warriors families are saving 20% off or their ticket price and at the same time, each ticket earns our club funds that will be used to offset player fee shortfalls.  It’s a WIN-WIN-WIN …. and of course, it will be a WIN where it counts …. on the TD Place field!

REDBLACKS vs Esks

Our Warriors will have to get in bed ASAP because our Tykes (ages 8-10) and Mosquito team (11-12) will both be competing in Canada’s Largest Football Festival at Bob Barr Field in Kanata (at the Kanata Rec Centre) Sunday all day.  This year NCAFA has combined the annual Friday Night Tykes and Mosquito Madness into one huge festival of football.  Bring your lawn chairs and come out to see how big football is in Ottawa.  As you may or may not know, NCAFA is Canada’s largest football association.  Bring your lawn chair and be ready to cheer on youth football in Ottawa.  Football is the best game in town.  Come out to see what all the excitement and fuss is about!
