Bell Warriors Enter Our 64th Year

February 22, 2019/in Headlines /by Paul Stewart

“2018 marked the 63rd anniversary of our league (NCAFA) and the Bell Warriors Football Club.  The good we do and good we have done is a simple product of setting a proud example of selfless commitment to our community, our club, our players and each other.  We are stronger and better when we work together as a team and whether our youth appreciate the example we set at the time, someday they will.  Those that can do.  Those that can do more volunteer.  Our success as a non-profit community association and football club is a product of years of building on our successes.  We have much to be proud of and it is in situations like this that we have a forum to praise our many caring volunteers; to be grateful for the experience; and proud of our many accomplishments.   2018 was a great year and I am excited to see what we can achieve.”  – summed up Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors President at the Warriors AGM held Feb 21.

Warrior Day Another Fun Day of Football

May 16, 2016/in Headlines /by Paul Stewart

The 5th Annual Warrior Day has come and gone and as with previous events, everyone left having had a great time. The annual FREE event returned to the Richmond Fair Grounds this year.  Thankfully the weatherman cooperated and we made it through the entire event with only a few drops of rain.  “Warrior Day is a fun event that we host annually for free.  It’s a chance for young players to get introduced to our great sport and for those that already play, there is some quality training to reinforce good football fundamentals.  This year’s event finished with a fun mini-tournament of touch football that was a definite hit. ” stated Tim Sheahan VP of the Warriors.

There is so much more to the sport of football than X’s and O’s and winning and losing. The lessons learned playing football will serve our many Warrior players off the field as well long after their playing days are over.

Long-Time Warrior Tim Sheahan receives honour!

March 2, 2016/in Headlines /by Paul Stewart

Long-time Warrior volunteer, coach and Executive member Tim Sheahan was honoured today with his Community Builder Award at Ottawa City Hall.

United Way Ottawa honours Ottawa’s outstanding volunteers through its Community Builder Award program — those organizations, partnerships, agencies, neighbourhood groups and individuals who work tirelessly, passionately and collaboratively to make Ottawa a better place in which to live, work and raise a family.

In addition to the winners’ awards, their names are inscribed on the Wall of Inspiration.  Located in Jean Pigott Hall at Ottawa City Hall, the Wall of Inspiration is a visible reminder to residents and visitors of the enduring commitment that these individuals and organizations have made to Ottawa. “The Wall of Inspiration is about bringing together outstanding volunteers and celebrating the positive imprint their work has left on our community. Beyond our wishes to recognize their valuable work, we also want to inspire the rest of the community to become involved and play their own role in making Ottawa a stronger community,” says Michael Allen, President and CEO, United Way Ottawa.

‘Coach Tim’, 3rd from the right in the above picture, wanted to sum up the experience and here are his words of observation and thanks:  “The Program started exactly on time at 12:00 noon, unlike most of our practices.  Anyway, Mayor Jim Watson was a guest speaker as well as a Rabbi Reuven Bulka, United Way CEO & President Michael Allen and reprentatives from Scotia Bank (the sponsor of today’s event ).  The gentleman that presented me with my plaque last year, Waub Rice,  was the M.C. for today’s event .  It started with Waub’s going through a typical dissertation of who the type of people are that are given community awards.  He then began to recall the story of about presenting me with my award last year at our Winter Workouts at the Oz Dome.  He said that it was a big secret, and that Ann, Kyle and Brendan (Tim’s family) showed up in the middle of our Warriors practice secretly,  I remember it like it was yesterday.  I really didn’t clue in that day that the award was for me until he said my name. As I was sitting there today, I was just as surprised that he was telling the story about my award.  I was asked to stand up and be recognized and I gave a thankful wave. I falsely assumed that they would give a little story about each of the recipients.  Right after acknowledging me, they quickly went to a video presentation for Bryan Murray (The Community Builder of the Year).  After that, each recipient was called forward to take a group photo around the 2015 plaque on the wall.  I was absolutely blown away that I would be included as part of today’s program and quite flattered… I want to thank all, who are involved with Bell Warriors Football.  We don’t do what we do to be recognized.  We do it because we have something to give and we love being part of a club/organization that really cares about the sport and those playing it.  I couldn’t help but reflect on these past 11 years and wonder how life could have been very different for me, and my family, if my boys hadn’t found The Bell Warriors.  I am thankful for the 11 years of association with the club, and very thankful for the many relationships that I , and my family , have forged.  Warriors for Life!” ~ Tim Sheahan.

… & the Winner is – THE WARRIORS!

January 12, 2016/in Headlines /by Paul Stewart

The Bell Warriors Football Club has reached out to Warriors families, supporters and local businesses and the response was better than could have been expected Saturday (January 9/16) at their Team Banquets. Two Club banquets were held. One for the two youngest teams (Tyke ages 8-10 and Mosquito ages 11-12) and one for the Warriors two oldest teams (Pee Wee ages 13-14 and Bantam ages 15-16). In addition to the big day of banquets, the Warriors hosted their 4th Annual Silent Auctions, one with each banquet. In all, the Warriors Club raised over $5,000 which will go directly back towards purchasing new football equipment for our players and ensuring their sport is affordable for all.

Our first of two Silent Auctions of the day.

Our first of two Silent Auctions of the day.

“Football has never been bigger in Ottawa.  This increased awareness of our great sport has led to a paralleled increase of support of our Warriors football programs.  One of our primary goals as a club is to focus on player safety by upgrading our equipment and re-certifying our existing equipment annually.  Unlike other sports, keeping our sport as affordable as possible is essential.  What we offer our young players is far too important to have financial barriers limit enrolment. It’s a constant challenge to balance.  We introduced Silent Auctions to our banquets three years ago and with this year’s proceeds, we have raised approximately $20,000.  To put that into perspective, this could cover the purchase cost of over 60 new helmets or registration fees for over 60 player.” says Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors President and Bantam Head Coach.

Stewart continues, “We rely heavily on community support to offer our football programs.  Most people do not realize that less than 50% of our proceeds come as a result of player fees.  So much of our Warrior volunteers’ time is dedicated to hosting winter conditioning sessions; fielding our tackle football teams and girl’s spring touch football teams.  Over the last few years, more sponsors have recognized our financial challenges and have stepped up with financial and in-kind support.  We truly thank our 2015 Bell Warrior sponsors:

Gold Sponsors:  Scotiabank; Primo Self Storage; Ontario Iron Works;  The Glen Scottish Pub & Restaurant; Ottawa Valley Kitchens

Silver Sponsors: Yasmin Fues; RCMP Officer’s Mess; King’s Independent Grocer

Bronze Sponsors:  Jill Dulmage; Battle River Bison Co.; Bradley’s Commercial Insurance; Don Cherry’s Sports Grill; Danby’s Bar & Grill; BMO Global Asset Management; Rona; Stittsville News

Friend of the Warriors Sponsors:  Mike Polito; Janet & Mike Keenan; Susan & Rick Rab; Grant & Cathy England; David Rheaume; 1951 West Kitchen & Bar

“The Warriors volunteer over 5,000 hours a year because we are committed to instill the importance learning the value of hard work, respect, responsibility, commitment, sportsmanship and leadership in our local youth.  Our motto, ‘Warriors For Life’, represents our dedication to be there for our youth on and off the field and long after their playing days are done.”

Special Guest Speaker at this year’s Warriors Banquets was Justin Phillips of the Ottawa REDBLACKS.  Mr Phillips went to Laurier University where he won the Vanier Cup.  He went on to play for 7 years for the Calgary Stampeders where he won a Grey Cup before becoming the Ottawa REDBLACKS’ first free agent signing.  In his ninth year in the CFL this year, Justin started his playing career with the Bell Warriors Football Club.  In 2013, he became the Bell Warriors inaugural inductee into the Bell Warriors Hall of Fame.
