Championship Week – Huge Warrior Success!

Having 4 teams in the NCAFA Championships was a great honour for our Club this past weekend.  We are excited to announce that our Tykes and Bantams came out on top!

Tyke:  “In our semi-final game we would make a dramatic second half comeback against the Outaouais Saints to thrust us into the Sullivan Conference NCAFA Championship against the East Ottawa Generals.  Like true Warriors, our young players relied on their preparation to compete with disciplined defense and some great running by our Offensive backs Greg Cowan (Stittsville), Avery Osbourne (Stittsville), Julian Beaulieu (Stittsville) and Ribensley Boisette (Ottawa) in the final minutes sealing an exciting victory for the Warriors.” ~ Brian Patterson, Tyke Head Coach

Mosquito:  “The Bell Warriors Mosquito team had a hugely successful 2014 Season. Undefeated during the regular season, led by quarterback Josh Baylin (Nepean), they relied on a combination of the strong running of Trey O’Brien (Nepean) and Daniel Briere (Nepean) in the backfield with the size and speed on defense of Ethan Ryan (Carleton Place), Shyreek Phillips (Nepean), Jacob Smith (Nepean) and Jack Buckley (Stittsville) to go 8-0 during the regular season. A quarter final win followed by a dramatic double overtime win in the semi-finals gave Bell its first A Cup appearance in many years.  Although not victorious in the A Cup, the Bell Warriors showed true class throughout 2014 against difficult competition all season and no doubt can build on this success in the future.” ~ Richard Baylin, Mosquito Head Coach.

Pee Wee:  “The Bell Warriors Pee Wee team won the Western Conference Champions for the fourth time in the past five years.  On the offensive side of the ball, QB James Keenan (Stittsville) led our team all year leading the Warriors to the A-Cup final for the 4th time since 2010.  Receivers Eric Conley (Ottawa) and Josh Streng (Carleton Place) were supported with the determined running of Andrew Fullerton (Stittsville).  Defenesively, Malik Yusof was a standout linebacker while Steven Schwartz (Nepean) was a team leader on and off the field for us.  We came across a very tough Cumberland Panthers in the final and came up a little short but we couldn’t be prouder of our boys and the Warriors for their great season.” ~ Michael Polito, Pee Wee Head Coach and Warrior VP.

Bantam:  “Our season was marred by some unfortunate injuries which gave a lot of players more opportunity to get more playing time this season.  In the long run, this ended up making us a better team and this was never more evident than in our final two sudden-death games.  In the Chorney Conference Semi-Final, we beat the Kanata Knights 38-0 (a team we had previously lost to earlier in the year) and in the final, we met the South Ottawa Mustangs who we’d also lost to in week 2.  Our Warriors were determined to come away with a different outcome and that’s exactly what they did with a convincing win.  Dilan Parry (North Gower) came back to lead our scoring while Jack Rabb (Richmond) came away with the Offensive Player of the Game.  Andrew Beattie (Richmond) and Ross Polito (Stittsville) both led our dominant defense.” ~ Paul Stewart, Bantam Head Coach and Bell Warrior President.

Warriors All Play in NCAFA Championship

All four of the Bell Warriors Football Club’s 4 tackle program teams won their semi-final games this past weekend.  The Warriors Bantam team (15-16 years old) lost earlier in the season to the Kanata Knights but came out victorious Thursday night with a convincing 38-0 win.  This set up another opportunity to avenge a previous season loss to the South Ottawa Mustangs this coming Saturday, November 1.    “The  Mustangs were by far the better team that day.  They were a more determined team and we would expect no less in our Championship Final.  For our Warriors to come away successfully, we will have to play with more focus and desperation.  I’m sure the Mustangs will come into the game confident and our group will come out determined.  We played with a level of desperation in our semi-final win over the Kanata Knights 38-0 last week.  We had lost to the Knights earlier in the season as well so our coaches are hoping our boys learned what it takes to rebound and come to play.  At the beginning of the year, we had thought we would have a team that, if all went well, would compete with the best teams at Bantam.  We’ve had an odd number of unfortunate injuries that forced us to shuffle our line-ups virtually every week.  That hasn’t helped us.  We still have a couple of important veterans out but we’re hoping the extra playing time our backups have had this year will be to our advantage.  You never know for sure what’s going to happen and that’s why you play the game. I know one thing for sure.  When you play the Mustangs you can always expect a tough hard-hitting battle.”  Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors Bantam Head Coach and President

The Bell Warriors play in the largest amateur football league in Canada – the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA).  The NCAFA Championships will all be played at Minto Field starting tonight with the Tyke (ages 8-10) Sullivan Championship which will pit the Bell Warriors vs the East Ottawa Generals.  The Tykes won a thrilling come-from-behind 33-30 win Sunday night to earn their spot in the Championship.  The Warriors Bantams play Saturday vs the Mustangs which will be followed on Sunday by the Warriors Mosquito and Pee Wee Clubs.

“At the Mosquito level, 1st-time head coach Richard Baylin will be leading his undefeated Mosquito squad vs the undefeated Cumberland Panthers.  This came about due to a phenomenal double OT 28-22 win over a dynamic North Gloucester Giants team.  The final matchup of the best from the West facing the best from the East will be sure to be a thriller.  Following the Mosquito final, the Warriors Pee Wees will also be facing the Cumberland Panthers.  The Warriors Pee Wees will be led by aggressive defensive leaders Steven Schwartz (Nepean) and Malik Yusef (Stittsville) while offensively, QB James Keenan (Stittsville) will be steering a well-rounded offensive attack.  The speedy RB Andrew Fullerton (Stittsville) will be supported by WR’s Eric Conley (Nepean), Josh Streng (Carleton Place) and Nicholas Walter (Stittsville).  The Warriors are very proud of what we have accomplished this year and having all four of our teams competing in the Regional NCAFA Championships should make for one exciting week of football for our Warriors supporters, families and players”, concludes Paul Stewart.

The Bell Warriors Football Club stands for RESPECT-RESPONSIBILITY-DIGNITY-FITNESS-GENEROUSITY-LEADERSHIP.  Since 1955, the Bell Warriors Football Club has offered football programs for boys and girls ages 8-16 in the communities of Britannia, Bayshore, Bells Corners, Richmond, Munster and Stittsville. For more details on how you or your business can show your support for the Bell Warriors Football Club, go to the Sponsorship Opportunities page at www.bellwarriors.ca or email president@bellwarriors.ca.

Jim Wagdin Scholarship Winners Announced

In 1999, the Bell Warriors Football Club introduced a Post-Secondary Scholarship Program which is now known as the Bell Warriors Jim Wagdin Scholarship Program.  Jim Wagdin was a coach with the Bell Warriors for 24 years and retired from the club as President in 2012.  His commitment to the Warriors and his community reflect the values the Warriors want to reinforce in our players with this post-secondary scholarship program.  Every year since, the Warriors have given up to two $1,000 scholarships.  The three main selection criteria are Athletic experience, Academic achievement, and Community volunteerism.  This year’s two winners are two young men that were both stellar players with the Warriors:  Charlie Keenan and Mitchell Henselwood.  In all, the Warriors have given out $30,000 to ex-Warrior players in support of their scholastic goals and aspirations.  On and off the field, the Warriors stand by our players and believe in giving back to our community.

City of Ottawa Recognizes Warriors

The City of Ottawa bestowed the Bell Warriors today with an honour for our years of commitment to football and youth in our community.  The City of Ottawa Recognition Ceremony saw some 150+ supporters and dignitaries enjoy a great day of celebrating the Warriors proud history.

“It is amazing what has been accomplished over the past 50+ years by our Warriors.  Year after year, a small army of volunteers puts on Warrior football programs for our boys and girls while committing over 5,000 hours a year of their time.  None of what we accomplish annually would happen without this generous dedication and commitment.   …and I know if you asked any of our Warrior volunteers or coaches why they did it or continue to do it, the answer will always be the same.  It’s for the kids and more importantly it’s because of the kids.  In any one season, we’ll have over sixty one and a half hour practices.  That is an unreal amount of time spent with our players.  During each season, we are inevitably touched by those special moments that we have been fortunate enough to witness in each player’s year where they get a true glimpse of the greatness that lies within each of them.”

“It is immensely rewarding to see a child learn the recipe for their success and swell with pride when they acknowledge that they can achieve things they couldn’t imagine doing before.  For over 50 years, our Warriors families, volunteers and staff have committed to mentor our youth because we love football.  It is the ultimate team sport.  Our players learn to commit to each other selflessly, to be open to take risks and face their challenges, to work hard to achieve your goals and to have a passion for life.  These are all values that our Warriors organization embrace and will serve our young players and community well long after their playing days are over.  On behalf of our entire organization, I must thank the City of Ottawa for this Recognition of our Club and this tremendous event.  This will be a day we will all remember. Thank you.  Warriors for Life!” ~ Paul Stewart, Bell Warriors President.

Nepean Councillor Rick Chiarelli, Sittsville Councillor Shad Qadri and Mayor Jim Watson all spoke to the importance to our community of the Warriors program.  Included in the many speakers was Warrior Alumni and Ottawa REDBLACK captain Justin Phillips.  Justin and his two brothers all played youth football with the Warriors.  Justin has had an illustrious pro career starting with the Calgary Stampeders and now joining the REDBLACKS in their inaugural season as their team captain.

Justin Phillips was also Inducted into the Bell Warriors Hall of Fame at the Recognition Ceremony.  Past-President Jim Wagdin was on hand to make the presentation to Phillips who was surprised and proud of the honour.

Our final presentation of the day was made to the 2013 NCAFA Volunteer of the Year Award – President’s Award:  to Karin Statham of the Bell Warriors.  Of Karin’s commitments to the Warriors, President Paul Stewart said, “Our Bell Warriors nominee for the 2013 NCAFA Volunteer of the year, Karin Statham, had a tireless commitment to our events last year which was pivotal to the success of our club.  Her role as Director of Canteens has not only fed our masses with a welcoming cheerful and warm level of service, it has also brought over $10,000 in profit back to support our players in the past two years.  Karin has raised the level of involvement of new families and volunteers like never before.  I am a firm believer in setting a good example for our youth to embrace and having a leader like Karin, the 2013 NCAFA President Award winner,  single-handedly has motivated our supporters.”

Girl’s Touch Football Growing Like Crazy

Close to 400 girls representing 23 city-wide National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) Girl’s Touch Football teams competed Saturday at Deevy Pines Park, Kanata and what a great day it was.  The weather was ideal for a full day of competition for this 1st Annual Girl’s Touch Football NCAFA event.

Rodney Moors, NCAFA Director of Non-Contact Football, organized the tournament.  “We wanted to host an event to raise the visibility of our sport in the community while having a great day of girl’s touch football.  The sport continues to grow and I attribute that to the fact that the sport combines running, catching and throwing more than any other.  It’s a great sport for conditioning, team spirit and athleticism.  We will definitely put this event on our annual NCAFA girl’s touch football schedule”, states Rodney Moors.

Rodney Moors, a teacher at Bell High School, is also the Director of Non-Contact Football for the Bell Warriors Football Club.  Since 1955, the Bell Warriors Football Club has offered football programs for boys and girls ages 8-16 in the communities of Britannia, Bayshore, Bells Corners, Richmond, Munster and Stittsville.  Tryouts are just under way for the Bell Warriors Tackle Football program.  For more details on how you or your business can show your support for the Bell Warriors Football Club or if you have a child interested in playing football, go to www.bellwarriors.ca for details or contact president@bellwarriors.ca.

Inaugural TOUCHDOWN Clinic is AWESOME!

“It was awesome”, says Paul Stewart, President of the Bell Warriors Football Club.  Over 100 local football players ages 13-21 attended the inaugural TOUCHDOWN Advanced Football Skills Camp this past Saturday, April 19th at the Ben Franklin Dome.  “The outcome of the clinic was better than we could ever have hoped for.  This was a one-of-a-kind event that really ended up being a launch of the upcoming football season in Ottawa”, states Stewart.

The Bell Warriors Football Club were able to rent the entire Ben Franklin Dome (which doesn’t happen every day).  “It was a big commitment that we wanted to make the most of so we reached out to some respected football coaches in the community to evaluate their interest” observes Stewart.  First on the list was Ron Raymond, University of Ottawa QB Coach and Senior OVFL Head Coach for the Cumberland Panthers.  Ron was eager to volunteer as was Rodney Moors.  Rodney is the National Capital Amateur Football Association (NCAFA) Director of Non-Contact Programs and has won 12 Canadian Touch Football Championships as a player and coach.  “It was when I made my third “reach out” to Warrior alumni and Ottawa REDBLACKS 1st trade Justin Phillips of Stittsville that we knew we were going to host an event.  Justin responded by saying ‘I’d love to help coach and I’ll bring a bunch of my CFL buddies’.  That’s when we made the commitment to put on a region-wide football clinic and the rest is history” said Stewart.

To put on an event of this type of scale the Bell Warriors reached out to Elite Performance Academy (EPA) of Ottawa.  Owned by CFL alumni Pat Woodcock and Donnie Ruiz, and Munster resident and long-time coach Rob Hamm, EPA are renowned for training athletes of all ages to take the steps to the next level of competition.  EPA agreed to oversee each positional station and act as Camp Directors.  EPA reached out to some of their extended supporters and were able to get more volunteer coaches for the clinic.  Darren Joseph came to coach RB’s (running backs).  Darren is a 13 year CFL vet and still holds the CJFL Season Rushing Record from his days with the Ottawa Sooners.  Kevin Scott (6 year CFL vet) of the Ottawa REDBLACKS joined to coach Offensive Linemen and Long Snapping.  Dexter Ross, NCAA All-American and CFL vet, pitched in to coach Defensive Linemen while Steve Glenn (10 year CFL vet and 3 time All-Star) helped with Linebackers.  Justin Phillips lined up Ottawa REDBLACKS Full Back John Delahunt, 6 year CFL Offensive Lineman Jon Gott of the Calgary Stampeders and his team-mate Brad Sinopoli (3 years as a Wide Receiver and former Hec Crighton Winner with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees).  There was also a last-minute addition.  Drew Tate, Calgary Stampeder starting QB, gave up his Saturday night of the Easter weekend to give back to the football community.

2014 Inaugural Touchdown Advanced Football Skills Camp

2014 Inaugural Touchdown Advanced Football Skills Camp

“We have never put on an event of this scale before and it was clear from the start that the football community was on board to make this event a success.  We wanted to have a first-class advanced football skills camp that would be accessible to all.  ‘Football for All’ is a driving mandate with our club.  We charged only $20 per player for two hours to learn from the pros.  We had players as far away as Alexandria, Pembroke and Kingston attend the camp that shows the need for a clinic like this in the region.  When the event was over, the entire group went over to the side of the dome to listen to some truly inspiring messages from the pros, sign some autographs and get some pictures taken”, said Stewart.  When asked if the Bell Warriors would consider making the non-profit TOUCHDOWN Skills Camp and annual event, he didn’t hesitate.  “We can’t wait. You better believe that this will be an annual event on the football calendar”, concluded Stewart.
