It’s official! The 2016 Jim Wagdin Bell Warriors Post Secondary Scholarship winners have been announced and this year’s winners are Kurtis Schaefer of Stittsville and Brad Cowan of Ashton.
Kurtis Schaefer credits his experience with the Warriors as “Playing for the Bell Warriors, I did not just win or lose games or have personal accomplishments. I learned valuable life lessons that I believe I would not have learned anywhere else in my life. With the Warriors, I learned how hard work pays off with the endless sprints at the end of practice for example. I learned the quality of leadership by being put in the role as a team captain for the majority of my years as a Warrior. I learned how to get along with 30+ random people (that I have never met before) and then bond together on the football field to eventually become a family while trying to do something great that season. Lastly, I learned the value of respect. I earned a huge sense of respect for my coaches who would dedicate a tremendous amount of time to come out to practices and games to help us get better. The coaches taught, pushed and helped us grow from little boys into responsible young men.”
Kurtis has completed his 1st year of Queens University where he dressed and played for the Gaels as a true freshman. He’s now a 2nd year Gael and he has quickly become an integral player for the Queens club. In addition to his support with our Warriors programs as a mentor over the years, Kurtis has been very active with Queen’s Motion Ball program and more recently, the Gaels Care program. This program saw Varsity athletes from all of the Queen’s teams go into local schools to work with children with special needs or at-risk children. Most recently Kurtis was involved with a program that one of my teammates started called CESAP. CESAP is a program designed to inform youth about concussion prevention and education. Kurtis’ role in this program was to help run clinics locally for school and football programs in Kingston. What a great role model for our Warriors’ program. CONGRATS KURTIS!
This is how Brad Cowan described his time with the Warriors, “As I look back, being able to say I am a “Warrior for Life” is something that I am extremely proud of. The Bell Warriors taught me the importance of team work, commitment and putting the best interests of the team ahead of my own. It meant showing up to every practice, giving it my best effort and trusting the process. Trusting my coaches, team mates and everyone involved who helped us to be successful. As I start my next steps in football with the Laurier Golden Hawks, I can take with me the things I learned from the Bell Warriors such as a strong work ethic and being a good team mate and know that these qualities will carry me forward. It is these qualities I don’t take for granted. I hope to have many more positive experiences at Laurier over the next four years.”
Brad has been involved as a volunteer at the Ottawa Food Bank through the TELUS Day of Giving. He was a volunteer at South Carleton High School to speak to graduating students his former Middle School (Goulbourn Middle School) on the experiences of transitioning from Goulbourn to South Carleton High School. Additionally, Brad participated in the Link Crew program at South Carleton providing orientation to Grade 9 students. He assisted in coaching young hockey players in Initiation Level with the Stittsville Minor Hockey Association and Brad has been a volunteer at the Scott Tokessy (Baseball) Tournament that helps to raise money for CHEO. Brad makes a very worthy winner of this year’s Jim Wagdin Bell Warriors Post-Secondary Scholarship. CONGRATS BRAD!

The Warriors are proud to announce that the 17th, 18th, 19th and now 20th Warrior alumni from recent years have just committed to play football at the next level!
#17 Brad Cowan
“Brad Cowan was a standout Warrior player for years winning Outstanding Linebacker at Pee Wee and Most Improved Player his first year of Bantam. An unfortunate ankle injury prohibited him from playing for most of his last year as a Warrior. One thing I always appreciated in my years coaching Brad was that he had great football instincts and was very athletic and agile for such a big young man. It was a shame he missed out on most of his final Bantam year but he worked hard in the off-season to be ready for his 1st year at Midget. He made the most of his opportunity ultimately winning the Rookie of the Year with our sister club the Bel-Air Norsmen and the NCAFA League Championship while catching the eye of CIS recruiters. The Warriors are proud of Brad and know he’ll thrive at Laurier University as a Golden Hawk.”
“Hybrid” defender Brad Cowan a welcome addition to the Laurier linebacking corps.
#18 Jack Rabb
Jack Rabb of Richmond has recently committed to play football at the next level with the University of Queen’s Gaels. Jack is a gifted student from South Carleton who has been awarded the Silver Medal which signifies an average of 90% or over. It’s his prowess on the gridiron, however, which has earned him a coveted spot with the Gaels of Kingston. Jack is another product of the Bell Warriors Football Club. He started playing football 6 years ago at the age of 12 with the Warriors and soon became a reliable receiver, QB, punter and kicker. “Jack was a great young man to coach. He is an immensely positive and cerebral player that competes hard and has a knack of making plays under pressure. At 6’ 4” tall, Jack is a hard target to miss on routes. He also has a CIS level leg already and it wouldn’t surprise me if he becomes a standout punter for the Gaels. Playing football at the next level is a big opportunity for a young student athlete. Jack is the 18th Warrior alumni to commit to play NCAA or CIS football in the past few years. We’re proud that so many of our players have enjoyed success playing football and are being given an opportunity to continue playing the sport they love while getting a post-secondary education.”

#19 Ross Polito
Ross Polito of Stittsville has just committed to join the York University Lions. Ross was a major award winner at every level with the Warriors and capped his time with the club winning the inaugural Bantam Leadership Award in his last Warrior season. At the Midget level (ages 17-19), the Warriors join with the neighbouring Bel-Air Club to field the Bel-Air Norsemen. Ross played for the Norsemen this past year and was an important part of their NCAFA Championship team. “I’ve known Ross for a long time and have had the pleasure of coaching him at all 4 Warrior age groups. What he didn’t have in size when he started with us, he more than made up for with his courage, dedication, competitiveness and smarts. You always knew you could trust him in pressure situations to make a play and he was like a coach on the field. I couldn’t be happier for him to be able to play at the next level” Ross makes the 19th commit from recent years from the Warriors. He joins Jack Rabb of Richmond (Queens) and Brad Cowan of Asthon (Laurier) who were the 17th and 18th commits.

#20 Quinn Stewart
Quinn Stewart of Richmond has made the decision to commit to the St FX X-Men of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Quinn played 9 years with the Warriors and was a 5 time major award winner including a 3 time MVP. The last two years he was with the Norsemen. He finished his 11th year of football this year by winning the NCAFA Midget Championship with his Norsemen teammates Jack, Brad and Ross. Quinn’s final NCAFA season was capped by being named to the NCAFA All-Star team (for the third time), the Norsemen’s MVP Award and NCAFA Midget Most Outstanding Offensive Player Award. Tim Sheahan, Warriors VP who coached Quinn for years, states “Quinn Stewart was a decorated Bell Warrior, winning Defensive and Offensive Player of-the-year honours as well as MVP honours at several levels. He was one of only a small handful of players that played 9 years of football for our club. He was talented for sure; as a defensive player in his early years , he was responsible to his position and an outstanding form tackler. He excelled as an offensive player because of his “smarts “ for the game. Quinn has a strong arm and deceptive, powerful speed, which made him the obvious choice as our field leader at QB. As Quinn matured as a player, his abilities grew, but his most outstanding quality is that of team leader. His team mates followed his lead as he competed in practice every single night, and his polished skills allowed him to succeed on the field on game days. Our club has graduated many players on to the CIS , but none with the number of wins that Quinn was part of in his 9 years.”

The Bel-Air Norsemen are the 2015 NCAFA Midget Champions!!!
The Championship was a rematch to avenge the two earlier games that the Norsemen had lost against the Nepean Eagles during the regular season. Although standout receivers Dilan Parry and Malcolm Turgeon (both Warrior alumni) were unable to play, the Norsemen came committed and were rewarded with an impressive 11-6 win.
The Norsemen controlled the ball throughout the first half but weren’t able to finish until midway through the 2nd quarter on a one yard plunge by Norsemen Captain and QB Quinn Stewart (Warriors alumni) to put the Norsemen up 7-0. Quinn Stewart went down with an injury soon after the score, and although he was able to stay in the game as a wide receiver, back-up QB Jack Rabb (also a Warrior alumni) had to take the majority of the snaps for the rest of the game.
In the third quarter, wide receiver and place kicker Tyler Gray added insurance with a missed field goal for a point and another successful field goal in the fourth to put the Norsemen up 11-0. The Eagles were able to get 1 TD in the final minutes of the game on a long bomb but it wasn’t enough against the stifling Norsemen team. Head Coach Tony Violante said after the game that, “We came to conquer and we dominated in every facet of the game.”
At the Midget level (17-19 year olds), the Warriors partner with our neighbours at Bel-Air to field the Bel-Air Norsemen. The Norsemen are filled with Warrior alumni and took to the field against the Nepean Eagles (which is a partnership between the Eagles and Myers Riders) Friday, October 30 at 8:15 p.m. at the Nepean Sportsplex.
Big CONGRATS to the Bel-Air Norsemen, head coach Tony Violante and his staff on the impressive win!
This is not a time to sit back Warriors’ supporters. This is a time to get bundled up. It’s time to put on all of your Warrior Wear and it’s time to cheer as hard as you can for our Warriors….it’s CHAMPIONSHIP WEEK!
Our Tykes and Mosquito clubs didn’t make it to the finals but we have to start off by congratulating head coaches Brian Patterson (Tyke) and Richard Baylin (Mosquito) for instilling a love for our great sport and building the foundation for the continued growth of our Club. We can’t thank you and your volunteers enough! THANK YOU!!!
At the Midget level (17-19 year olds), the Warriors partner with our neighbours at Bel-Air to field the Bel-Air Norsemen. The Norsemen are filled with Warrior alumni and take the field against the Nepean Eagles (which is a partnership between the Eagles and Myers Riders) Friday night at 8:15 p.m. at the Nepean Sportsplex. This will be a match-up that will showcase the best recruits and players from the Ottawa region. You won’t want to miss this one!
The Warriors Bantams (15-16 year olds) take the field on Halloween to face the West Carleton Wolverines. The Wolverines are a rugged, hard-hitting club so this will be a battle until the final whistle. Our Warriors will be looking to build on last weekend’s dominant win over the Bengals and carry their momentum to best the Wolverines who won in a lop-sided battle earlier this year. Best of luck Warriors!
Our final Warrior team in Championship Week is our Pee Wee team led by head coach Michael Polito. Mike’s Pee Wees are a well-balanced, skilled team that will need to bring all they have to come home with a victory over the undefeated Cumberland Panthers. We know this will be a showcase game for our league that, regardless of the outcome, will be a magnificent game. Go get ’em Mike!
Lots to celebrate Warriors but don’t be afraid to show our young Warriors your support. Cheer Loud. Cheer Proud. LET’S GO WARRIORS! #Warriors4Life
